Blackpool News

Blackpool's revamped tramway system has now recorded 5 million journeys over the 12 month period since April 2016, which is the highest number of passenger carried in a 12-month period since 1994. Passenger satisfaction is also up, with 96% of people surveyed saying they enjoyed the experience in the latest figures by the Department for Transport. The Tramway has been the number one attraction in Blackpool on Trip Advisor for the last two years and won 'highly commended' at the 2016 Global Light Rail Awards for 'Vision of the Year'. Two additional Flexity trams will join the fleet this year to cater for the increase in traffic and the extension to North Station.

The early summer timetables on buses and trams came into operation on 2 April when the tramway basic frequency was increased from a tram every 15 minutes to one every 10 minutes. The new timetable covers the summer, illuminations and winter periods through to March 2018.

The Blackpool Heritage Trust has recently acquired two unique vehicles, Paisley & District tramcar no.16 of 1904 (later Glasgow 1016), and the Blackpool Illuminated Hovertram 735 of 1963. An appeal for donations has been launched to secure their restoration to the operating fleet. Paisley 16 needs its four-wheeled truck refurbished with new steel tyres at a cost of £500 each before work on restoration of the body can take place. The Hovertram is still owned by the North Eastern Electrical Traction Trust (NEETT), but has been offered to the Trust to purchase, for which it is hoped to raise £3500. Further details and standing order forms can be found at the Blackpool Heritage Trust website.
