Manchester Anniversary

On 6 April, the tram network celebrated its 25th anniversary. Since opening on 6 April 1992, the network has grown to treble its original size to become the largest light rail system in the UK. The network currently carries more than 37m passengers every year.

Two new substations providing additional power and resilience across the Metrolink tram network are being installed as part of a multi-million pound improvement package. These are located in the park-and-ride sites at Brooklands and Whitefield and construction commenced at the end of March resulting in a permanent loss of 10 parking spaces at Brooklands and seven at Whitefield. There will also be some disruption to tram services over the May Day holiday weekend and 13/14 May on commissioning of the substations.

The Guided Busway between Leigh and Manchester which opened in April 2016 has already carried more than two million passengers according to First, operators of the 'Vantage' service between Leigh and Manchester city centre with an extension to the Oxford Road corridor expected to be fully completed by the end of April this year.
