Southampton study announced

The Solent Local Enterprise Partnership has commissioned a feasibility study into their plans to build a tram service in Southampton to ease traffic congestion. Their proposals were published last May and can be found on the LEP website (pdf file).

The plans include a new network across Southampton stretching from Southampton to Eastleigh with the possibility to extend further into towns including Fareham and Romsey. The study will look at the optimum routes for the Light Rail project which hopes to cover major Hampshire towns but will focus specifically on Phase One which will involve running trams from Southampton to Eastleigh.

There is a considerable amount of joint operation on busy local rail lines so it is not clear how practical the proposals are so it will be interesting to see the outcome of the study.

An article in the Andover Advertiser includes many pictures on the first generation Southampton trams.
