Light Rail for better public transport
The April meeting was unusually held on a Tuesday due to the Easter Bank Holiday. John Pigott and Nick Britton gave the third of their presentations on Austrian tramways. This time they covered the St. Florian, St, Polten and Innsbruck tramways, before moving to Vienna to cover the Stadtbahn, including scenes when left hand running was the norm. The Innsbruck section included scenes of the long closed route 4 to Solbad Hall and the Stubaitalbahn in a.c.days. After the interval the scene moved to Payerbach, as seen during a visit in 2003. They then returned to Vienna to present scenes of the Wiener Lokalbahn taken between 1962 and 2002.
In total the presentation included some 230 colour slides, all of which had been scanned into a Power Point presentation. The quality of reproduction was excellent, showing how much digital projection has improved. It was good to see flashbacks to an earlier era, thanks to the inclusion of many of the late Ron Copson’s collection, taken before many of us were able to visit Austria.
